The history page is composed of 2 different yet connected views - the timelines and the family tree, and a menu to switch between them. The sections below describe how to access and use this page. If you would like a personal guided tour, don't hesitate to send us a message through Contact Us to schedule some time.
If you are not Signed Up and Logged In, your access is restricted to just the information of the first generation. This is to limit public exposure to personal family data, even though we don't keep anything too sensitive. To Sign Up and Login and get access to it all, click the LOGIN option shown on the menu bar of the View Histories page (only shown on this page). If you haven't signed up, on the Login popup, click the Sign Up link towards the bottom, and you'll be prompted for your email and a new password for this site. (It can also be linked to your Google account if you have one). Your new login will be validated by an email sent to you that needs to be acknowledged. Once signed up, you'll follow the same Login menu option to log in. And once you're logged in, the top menu bar on the View Histories page will show LOGOUT.
This view presents a collection of stories laid out over a time period. Each story can contain text; images, recordings, and links to other content. Each timeline has an introductory page that is first displayed, click the button to see the rest of the full story content. You can use your mouse (or arrow keys) to scroll through the timeline. To bring up a story, click the
button – once a story is in focus, you can move to the next or previous story using the arrows at the bottom of the panel, for the story you are viewing. You can also browse through stories without going through them in order by simply closing the story you are viewing, scrolling through the timeline for other stories that interest you, and clicking the
button to open them for viewing one at a time.. If the story has images or other media, they will appear on the left, and bottom if more than one. To expand the image, or listen to a recording, click on the image; to close it, click on the X in the upper right corner. Note that when there are different types of media linked to a story, e.g. image and audio, selection links on the upper left of the story allow you to switch between them.
The relationships between the family members are displayed in a traditional family tree chart. Each node (box) in the chart represents either a child or head of household. Starting with Louis “Yuda Lieb” and Freida Trabin as the starting point down 5 generations (so far). Using your mouse, you can scroll, zoom in and out, and click on a node. On some nodes, there is an image that indicates a story has been created for this person/family in the timeline.
Clicking on this will switch to the timeline view and focus on the related story. The family tree can be displayed in full screen, or as a popup over the timeline view. This is controlled by the Select a view menu explained below.
In the upper left is a menu that is used to switch between the timeline and tree – a radio button for each full page view. Next to the timeline option is another button, a mini-tree, that is used to show a family tree popup over the timeline. That popup can be re-sized and re-positioned, as well as closed. It also has a button to go to the full view. The “hamburger” menu (≡) in the upper left corner, when clicked, gives options to return to the home page and to other timelines.
This menu also has an option to print the stories of the current timeline. This is a manual step - a link is displayed that must be copied to a new browser tab address bar. The print is then performed from that page. Note that only the default image is displayed. As with any image on the page, you can retrieve the media files in the stories by right-clicking on the image and "Save image as...".
